Costa Hummingbird

Found in the brush of arid deserts and gardens of the southwestern United States and the Baja Peninsula, the Costa Hummingbird feeds on the nectar of flowers and snaps up tiny insects in midair.  During courtship this tiny bird engages in a series of fierce swoops and arcing dives being certain to create an angle to the sun that shows off its irridescent plumage. Its dives pass only inches away from its prospective mate, and the rapidity of the swooping is accompanied by a high-pitched shriek produced by the tail. During cold nights the Costa, like other hummingbirds, will enter a form of hibernation to slow down its heart and respiration rate thus preserving heat and energy.

This exquisite carving shows the hummingbird with its delicate wings spread.  It is suspended in a flower on a wire stand and can be easily removed from the flower (or glued in, if you choose.)

All of our life-size birds are hand-carved from basswood (a very carveable wood that does not split and takes paint well), hand-feathered to show detail and painted with acrylic paint. The eyes are glass, feet are metal and base is wood.

The hummingbird carving measures 3 1/4 inches from head to tail, has a wingspan of 4" and with the stand has an overall height of 8.5 inches.
