Gryfalcon  

This magnificent bird of prey, the gryfalcon (pronounced jer-falcon), is the largest of the falcons.  Living in the High Arctic it nests on desolate cliffs in remote parts of Canada and Alaska but occasionally will be spotted in the northern United States.  Its plumage color varies according to its location and ranges from all white to dark gray-brown.  It is a fierce hunter and will snatch its prey in midair or plunge to the ground to capture waterfowl or mammals sometimes as large as hares.

 All of our birds are hand-carved from basswood (a very carveable wood that does not split and takes paint well), hand-feathered to show texture and detail and painted with acrylic paint. The eyes are glass, feet are metal and base is wood.

The gyrfalcon carving measures 10 inches from beak to tail and 7 inches from the head to the top of the base. The carving has an overall height of 11 inches.
