STELLER'S JAY

The Steller's Jay is found mainly along the western coast of North America ranging from Alaska through Nicaragua.  Prefering to live in coniferous forests of pine, spruce and fir, it builds its nest high up in trees.  Except when nesting, it lives in flocks and the birds can often be seen taking turns flying one by one across an open field calling loudly and swooping high up into tall pine trees. Its diet includes acorns, seeds, wild berries and small invertebrates, but will visit backyard feeders looking for black-oil sunflower seeds, corn and its favorite, whole raw peanuts.  It is an excellent mimic and warns other birds of danger by imitating the calls of predators such as the osprey and red-shouldered hawk.

All of our life-size birds are hand-carved from basswood (a very carvable wood that does not split and takes paint well), feathered to show detail and painted with acrylic paint. The eyes are glass, feet are metal and base is wood.

The Steller's Jay is approximately 11 inches from beak to tail, is 3.25 inches wide and has an overall height of  9.5 inches.  This is a wonderful carving with delicately blended coloring!
