Commonly found in the western and central part of North America, the Magpie is a flashy bird with iridescent dark blue-green wings and tail. An intelligent bird, it lives on farms or in suburban areas and is quite used to being around people. It builds a huge bushel-basket shaped nest of sticks about 3 feet in diameter high up in a treetop. It walks on the ground in search of beetles or grasshoppers or hitches a ride on cattle and gleans insects from its back.
All of our life-sized birds are hand-carved from basswood (a very carvable wood that does not split and takes paint well), hand-feathered to show detail and painted with acrylic paint. The eyes are glass, the feet are metal and the base is wood.
The carving has an overall height of 8 inches; the bird itself is 9.5 inches from beak to tail and 4.75 inches high.
