Description

FLICKER, NORTHERN

The Flicker is a large woodpecker that spends a good part of its day  foraging for ants on the ground. It has a brown back with dark barring on its wings and sports a black mustache.  The flicker population is widespread but is thought to be declining due to the competition with starlings for nest sites.

This magnificent carving depicts the flicker perched on a tall wooden stump painted to look like birch. All of our life-sized birds are hand-carved from basswood (a very carveable wood that does not split and takes paint well), hand-feathered to show detail and painted with acrylic paint. The eyes are glass, feet are metal and base is wood.

The overall measurement of this piece is 12 inches with the bird measuring 10 1/2 inches from beak to tail and 5 1/4 inches from head to foot.

A truly magnificent piece of art. This Northern Flicker is absolutely gorgeous and looks terrific on the white birch.
