The Purple Sandpiper, a very hearty species, can be spotted along wave-washed rocks and jetties from the Arctic in summer to both North American coasts during winter months. Slate-gray in summer, this carving shows the birds's winter brownish coloration with its heavy streaking on its back and chest. It is an especially beautiful work.
The carving measures 8.5 inches from beak to tail, is 6.5 inches high and has an overall height of 9.75 inches. All of our life-size birds are hand-carved from basswood (a very carveable wood that does not split and takes paint well), feathered to show detail and painted with acrylic paint. The eyes are glass, feet are metal and base is wood.
