SCISSOR TAILED FLYCATCHER

The graceful Scissor Tailed Flycatcher is commonly found in grasslands across most of the United States, northeastern Mexico, Central America and southern Canada.  The state bird of Oklahoma, it is named for the way it opens and closes its tail like a pair of scissors.  During courtship it performs a spectacular dizzying aerial demonstration complete with zigzag plunges, backward flips and somersaults. The bird has  soft grey upper feathers, light underparts, dark wings and an extremely long black tail outlined in white.

All of our life-size birds are hand-carved from basswood (a very carvable wood that does not split and takes paint well), hand-feathered to show texture and detail and painted with acrylic paint. The eyes are glass and feet are copper. The flycatcher is perched on a wire fashioned to look like barbed wire and set into a wood base.

The  Scissor Tailed Flycatcher carving measures 13 1/2 inches from beak to tail and has an overall height of 12 inches.
