KINGLET PAIR ON BIRCH LOG

The  kinglets are among the tiniest of birds and weigh between 3 and 4 ounces.  Kinglets are widespread, being found in North American and Eurasia.  The plumage is a grey green with a colorful head-marking on the male.  The feet are specialized for perching on conifer twigs with a long hind toe and claw for clinging vertically.

This carving depicts the male and female kinglets.  The birds are perched on a real piece of birch cut from New Hampshire woods. All of our life-size birds are hand-carved from basswood (a very carvable wood that does not split and takes paint well), feathered to show detail and painted with acrylic paint.  The eyes are glass and the feet are metal.
