Description

EASTERN TOWHEE (Rufous-sided towhee)

The Eastern Towhee is often detected by the rustling of dry leaves on the ground. The towhee has a dark head and back, rufous sides, a white belly and a red eye.   It forages for insects and seeds by hopping forward then jumping backward dragging both feet to reveal insects and seeds under the leaves. Living in thickets and at the edges of brushy woodlands, it makes its nest in leaf litter or low branches. When disturbed on the nest, the female will run away pretending to have an injury luring predators away from the nest.

All of our life-size birds are hand-carved from basswood (a very carveable wood that does not split and takes paint well), hand-feathered to show texture and detail and painted with acrylic paint. The eyes are glass and feet are copper. The base is wood.

The  Eastern towhee carving measures 7.5 inches from beak to tail and has an overall height of 5.25 inches.
